To any kid growing up in the UK, a BRIO train set is probably a familiar sight. Not sure about the US, but over here these things are practically synonymous with childhood. But BRIO are no longer the company they used to be and neither are their train sets…

Toy manufacturers across the board have had to adapt their products to cope with the rise of the home computer. Whilst some took to this like a duck to water, LEGO being a fine example, others have lost their way, it was announced only a couple of days ago that model making company AIRFIX is in a sticky situation. The trick is to embrace the technological revolution rather than compete against it, and that’s where I come back to BRIO. Wooden toys, brightly coloured and built to last. How can you make these items appeal to kids more used to Sony and Nintendo? BRIO’s answer is “The Networkers”. You’re not going to believe this!

To quote the press release:

‘The BRIO Network Toys 1.0 (1.0?!) are a bunch of creatures that live deep inside your computer, and spend their days delivering mail, searching for information and recycling stuff. There are also bugs among them trying to throw “the Network” off course’!

Honestly these things are really cute, the set covers some of the most well known computing terms e.g. email, search (called Search Pod - hope Apple don’t mind!), CD burning, mailbox, the trash, pop-ups, even viruses!

I suppose if you think about it, BRIO have used the analogy of a train set and applied to the computer, and I think it’s kinda funky!

Take a look at the web site for more info, to watch the video, to play the games (which are surprisingly fun!) or to download the free virus (yes you did read that right!!).
